Born in Paris in November 1947, Patrice Leconte spent his childhood and teenage years in Tours. He attended school at the Lycée Descartes. In 1966, he came to Paris to take the entrance exam to the IDHEC (The French Institute of Cinematography) where he studied from 1968 to 1969.
From 1970 to 1975 he worked for the newspaper Pilote as a writer and illustrator.
In 1975, he directed his first feature-length film, Les Vécés étaient fermés de l’intérieur, with Coluche and Jean Rochefort.
Since then, he has directed almost thirty films, including Les Bronzés, Tandem, Monsieur Hire, Le mari de la coiffeuse, Ridicule, La fille sur le pont, La Veuve de Saint Pierre, L’homme du train, Confidences trop intimes, Mon meilleur ami, Voir la mer, Le Magasin des suicides, Une Promesse, Une heure de tranquillité.
He has also staged several plays, including Ornifle (Jean Anouilh), Grosse Chaleur (Laurent Ruquier), Eloise (Claude Klotz), Correspondance de Groucho Marx (Groucho Marx), Je l’aimais (Anna Gavalda). And finally, he has also published three novels at Albin Michel Les femmes aux cheveux courts (April 2009), Riva-Bella (February 2011), and Le Garçon qui n’existait pas (April 2013), and a novel with Arthaud: Louis et l’Ubiq (2017).
